Award winning foreign correspondent and author Atia Abawi is visiting Columbus Junction! Ms. Abawi has covered some of the most influential, historic news events over the past 20 years, including being embedded in the US military, covering the trial in Myanmar of Aung San Suu Kyi, the raid that resulted in the death of Osama Bin Laden, the first interview for NBC with President Hamid Karzai in 2012, and President Barack Obama's historic visit to Israel and Palestine in 2013.
Ms. Abawi will be speaking about her All Iowa Reads Young Adult Novel of 2019, "A Land of Permanent Goodbyes." Ms. Abawi is a phenomenal speaker and, even if you haven't read the book, you'll enjoy her knowledge, speaking style, and storytelling regarding the Syrian refugee crisis. The novel is based on interviews Ms. Abawi had with Syrian refugees, making the novel even more heart-wrenching and real to readers. Many of our secondary building students have read the novel and will have the opportunity to hear her speak during the school day, though in an abbreviated manner, due to class time constraints. All members of the public are invited to attend; questions are invited at the end of Ms. Abawi's talk, and, should you like a book signed, this will take place following the conclusion of the program.
Ms. Abawi's visit is made possible by the State Library of Iowa, and many thanks for their coordination of her visit to Iowa!
